Road safety - in the forefront of the European Commission
In 2008, 39,000 European citizens lost their lives in road accidents occurred in the Member States of the Union, according to data presented at a conference organized last week by the European Commission. The main focus of this conference was the European Program of Action for Road Safety. "The new program of action will also focus on a number of key priorities such as accidents on rural roads (60% of total deaths) and vulnerable road participants, such as pedestrians, cyclists, riders and the elderly", said Antonio TAJANI, the European Commissioner for Transport, in the opening of the Conference. Although the measures taken in this area, largely, have proven effective, the number of road accidents in the European Union is still high: 1.3 million accidents annually, resulting in 43,000 deaths and 1.7 million injured. By 2010, the European Union has set as objective to reduce by 50% the number of road accidents, compared with the number registered in 2001.
At the same time, according to data provided by the Romanian Federation for Assistance of Accident Victims, over the last 20 years, on the Romanian roads, over 62,000 people have lost their lives.
According to statistics, on average, every year, road accidents occurred in Romania result in around 3,000 deaths. Also, road accidents account for the largest number of fatalities among young people between 16 and 24 years.
In our country, the high number of serious injuries has also materialized in an increase in claims for physical injuries or moral claims. In 2008, compensations for material damage held a share of 90% of the total, but lately, claims for physical injuries and moral compensations have significantly increased.
